The first wave of winter migratory birds, mainly cormorants, have arrived at Nanjing's Xuanwu Lake to spend the winter, marking the start of the lake's winter birdwatching season.

Cormorants are among the earliest winter visitors to arrive at Xuanwu Lake and among the easiest to observe at close range. They usually arrive in early October and leave the following March.
Improving water quality and plentiful food have helped attract a greater variety and number of wintering birds in recent years. From mid-October through December, other visitors, including Eurasian coots, mallards and mandarin ducks, will arrive in succession.
