Yongmu House is located halfway up Purple Mountain, about 600 meters in a straight line from the mausoleum’s Memorial Hall. In 1928, as the first phase of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum—including the Tomb and Memorial Hall—was nearing completion, the Committee on Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Tomb Construction decided to build a residence for Dr. Sun’s family to keep vigil. The site was chosen beside the former Wanfu Temple on Xiaomaoshan Hill, and the building was named Yongmu House, meaning “Eternal Remembrance.”

Yongmu House follows a traditional Chinese layout. “It includes a reception hall, four bedrooms, a kitchen, and four rooms on the lower level. Outside, there are flower beds enclosed by stone walls, creating a quiet and rustic setting.” The project was designed by architect Chan, G.P. and constructed by Sing King Kee Building Contractor. Construction began in the winter of 1928 and was completed in the spring of 1929, taking just four months. After its completion, both Madame Soong Ching Ling and Sun Fo stayed there while keeping vigil.

To the east of Yongmu House stands the Yizheng Pavilion, where Sun Fo once discussed state affairs and handled official duties during his mourning period. During the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, both Yongmu House and Yizheng Pavilion were destroyed, leaving only fragments such as damaged walls, a stone plaque, and the octagonal foundation of the pavilion.

In 1993, the Administration of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum restored Yongmu House and Yizheng Pavilion on their original sites, faithfully following their original design. In 2006, Yongmu House was listed as part of the third batch of Nanjing Municipal Protected Cultural Relic Units.

Quietly nestled in the mountains, Yongmu House stands as a place of deep remembrance for Dr. Sun Yat-sen, silently telling the story.
