Adjacent to the Straits of Malacca, Malacca is the capital city of the state of Malacca and used to be a maritime trade center. With an area of about 304.29 square kilometers and a population of nearly 500,000, Malacca is the fourth largest city in Malaysia. In 2008, Malacca, a famous tourist destination, was added to the World Heritage List by UNESCO. Nanjing and Malacca established sister-city relationship in October 2008. In 2017, Nanjing presented a pair of white marble lions to Malacca and placed them in Jonker Walk of Malacca to manifest the friendship between the two cities. In 2018, Nanjing and Malacca jointly held Malacca-Nanjing Culture Day to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of sister-city relationship.
