The year 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and is a critical year for achieving the goals and tasks outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan. Facing the complex and severe situation of increasing external pressures and growing internal challenges, the entire city has adhered to the guidance of Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It has fully implemented the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the 2nd and 3rd Plenary Sessions of the 20th Central Committee. The city has deeply studied and implemented the important speeches of General Secretary Xi Jinping on Jiangsu's work, and earnestly carried out the decisions and arrangements made by the Central Committee, the State Council, and the Provincial Party Committee and Government. Overall, the city's economy has operated steadily, showing progress amidst stability, with high-quality development advancing steadily and making solid strides in the construction of Chinese-style modernization.
I. Overview
According to preliminary calculations, the whole city has achieved a gross regional domestic product[2] of 1850.081 billion yuan for the whole year, up by 4.5% over the previous year. In terms of industries, the value-added of primary industry was 33.100 billion yuan, up by 3.5%; the value-added of the secondary industry was 583.106 billion yuan, up by 2.5%; the value-added of the tertiary industry was 1233.875 billion yuan, up by 5.4%. The value-added of primary industry accounted for 1.8% of the regional GDP, the value-added of the secondary industry accounted for 31.5%, and the value-added of the tertiary industry accounted for 66.7%. The per capita regional GDP for the year was 193,483 yuan, marking a 4.0% increase compared to the previous year.
At the end of the year, the city's permanent resident population was 9.577 million, an increase of 30 thousand or 0.31%. The urban population was 8.3607 million, accounting for 87.3% of the total population (urbanization rate of the permanent resident population), up by 0.1 percentage points over the previous year. The birth rate of the permanent resident population throughout the year was 6.19‰, the death rate was 5.15‰, and the natural growth rate was 1.04‰.
219.4 thousand new urban jobs were created throughout the year. A total of 622,400 job opportunities were provided throughout the year, and 6,000 rural laborers were newly transferred to other sectors.
The consumer price for the year increased by 0.4% compared with the previous year. In terms of categories, food, tobacco and alcohol increased by 0.7%, clothing increased by 1.1%, housing decreased by 0.2%, daily necessities and services increased by 0.7%, transportation and communications decreased by 2.6%, education, culture and entertainment increased by 1.9%, and healthcare increased by 3.0%, and other supplies and services increased by 3.9%.
The industrial producer's ex-factory prices decreased by 1.7% compared to the previous year, and the industrial producer's purchasing prices decreased by 1.4%.

A total of 201,800 new business entities were registered throughout the year, bringing the cumulative number of business entities to 1.818 million by the end of the year, an increase of 1.0% compared to the previous year.
Development of new types of productive forces in accordance with local conditions. The Purple Mountain Laboratory released globally leading results, including 6G non-cellular wide-area coverage. The national major scientific and technological infrastructure, Future Network Test Facility, was fully completed, and the Atomic Limit Micro-manufacturing Experimental Facility became a key pre-research project supported by the province. Nanjing successfully built the province’s first urban computing power network and was selected as a pilot city for national data infrastructure construction. The Sunan Special Steel Materials Cluster, led by Nanjing, and the Yangtze River Delta (including Jiangxi) Large Aircraft Cluster, in which Nanjing participated, were selected as 2024 National Advanced Manufacturing Clusters. Nanjing now boasts four nationally recognized advanced manufacturing clusters.
II. Agriculture
The total output value of agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery for the year reached 55.461 billion yuan, an increase of 4.5% compared to the previous year. By sector, the output value of agriculture (planting) reached 29.32 billion yuan, growing by 2.8%; forestry achieved an output value of 2.39 billion yuan, a decrease of 4.4%; animal husbandry generated an output value of 2.907 billion yuan, growing by 12.2%; fishery produced an output value of 15.637 billion yuan, growing by 5.9%; and agricultural, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery professional and auxiliary activities had an output value of 5.207 billion yuan, growing by 10.8%.
The total sown area of grain was 2.1336 million mu, an increase of 48,000 mu, or 2.3%, compared to the previous year. This includes 1.2271 million mu of rice, an increase of 2,100 mu; 719,800 mu of wheat, an increase of 63,900 mu; and 73,000 mu of corn, a decrease of 5,200 mu. The sowing area for the oilseed was 358,300 mu, an increase of 9,200 mu. The sowing area for vegetables and edible fungi was 1.2198 million mu, an increase of 5,200 mu.
The total grain output for the year was 1.0029 million tons, an increase of 9,400 tons, or 1.0%, compared to the previous year. Of this, summer grain output was 245,000 tons, an increase of 10.4%, while autumn grain output was 757,900 tons, a decrease of 1.8%. By type, wheat output was 243,200 tons, an increase of 23,300 tons, or 10.6%; rice output was 699,700 tons, a decrease of 6,100 tons; and corn output was 29,700 tons, a decrease of 2,900 tons. Oilseed output was 57,300 tons, an increase of 2,000 tons. Vegetable and edible fungi production reached 2.8532 million tons, an increase of 55,100 tons.
The year also saw the construction and upgrading of 58,100 mu of high-standard farmland, and the creation of 30,000 mu of "ton per acre" high-yield farmland. By the end of the year, there were 286 leading enterprises at or above the municipal level, 3,955 farmer professional cooperatives, and 7,214 family farms. The total number of visitors to leisure agriculture reached 44.54 million, with total income of 16.211 billion yuan. The city promoted agricultural mechanization by establishing 13 "unmanned farms", and the comprehensive mechanization rate for crop planting, cultivation, and harvesting reached 90%.
III. Industry and Construction
Throughout the year, the value-added of industrial enterprises above designated size increased by 3.2% over the previous year. By ownership type, state-controlled enterprises saw a value added growth of 4.5%, joint-stock enterprises grew by 5.0%, private enterprises increased by 5.1%, while foreign-funded and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan-invested enterprises decreased by 0.9%. By enterprise size, large and medium-sized enterprises grew by 1.7%, while small and micro enterprises grew by 7.1%.
By industry, the chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing industry grew by 3.7%, the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry increased by 5.5%, the ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing industry grew by 7.3%, the computer, communication, and other electronic equipment manufacturing industry rose by 4.8%, and the instrument and meter manufacturing industry grew by 5.6%. The production of advanced manufacturing-related products grew rapidly, with the output of medical instruments and equipment, industrial robots, electric motors, smartphones, and integrated circuits increasing by 15.6%, 7.4%, 194.8%, 34.4%, and 55.7%, respectively.

The total output value of construction industry achieved by qualified general contracting and specialized contracting enterprises included in the annual statistics was 513.515 billion yuan, up by 1.1% over the previous year.
IV. Fixed Asset Investment
The total fixed asset investment for the year amounted to 477.729 billion yuan, with a notable growth in emerging industries. The manufacturing sectors of electronic computers and office equipment, as well as new materials, increased by 69.5% and 11.5%, respectively.
Throughout the year, the sales area of commercial housing was 9.3012 million square meters, up by 2.4% over the previous year, of which the sales area of residential housing was 8.3169 million square meters, up by 4.2%.
V. Domestic Trade
The total retail sales of consumer goods for the year grew by 4.3% compared to the previous year. By consumption type, retail sales in above-designated size units increased by 2.8%, while restaurant revenues grew by 1.1%. Looking at specific product categories, among the retail sales in above-designated size units, the sales of new energy vehicles grew by 11.2%. Sales of sports and entertainment products, gold and jewelry, household appliances and audio-visual equipment, as well as electronic publications and audio-visual products grew by 87.5%, 4.9%, 8.1%, and 14.7%, respectively.
VI. Foreign Trade
According to customs statistics, the total import and export of goods in the whole city for the year was 545.92 billion yuan, down by 3.6% over the previous year. Exports amounted to 346.27 billion yuan, an increase of 3.9%; imports totaled 199.65 billion yuan, down by 14.3%. The total import and export volume of private enterprises was 227.65 billion yuan, an 8.8% increase over the previous year, accounting for 41.7% of the city's total foreign trade. The total value of general trade exports was 269.66 billion yuan, a growth of 7.2%, accounting for 77.9% of the total exports.
The actual utilization of foreign investment for the year was 2.833 billion USD. A total of 490 new and expanded projects were established during the year. The investment from key Belt and Road Initiative countries in the city reached 305 million USD, an increase of 25% from the previous year.
Throughout the year, there were 168 newly established overseas investment projects, and the agreed investment from China was 937 million dollars, a 40.9% increase compared to the previous year. The agreed investment in countries jointly building the "Belt and Road" was 517 million dollars, up by 178.6%.
The total turnover of foreign contracting projects for the year was 3.028 billion USD, a 30.7% increase over the previous year. Of this, the turnover for Belt and Road Initiative countries amounted to 2.87 billion USD, accounting for 94.7% of the total.
VII. Transportation, Post and Telecommunications, and Tourism
The total volume of highway freight transportation for the year reached 247.8271 million tons, an increase of 13.2% compared to the previous year. Waterway freight volume totaled 198.4442 million tons, up by 5.7%. Railway freight shipments amounted to 8.32 million tons, a growth of 7.9%. Air cargo transportation volume stood at 63,000 tons, also rising by 7.9%. The airport's total cargo and mail throughput reached 414,600 tons, an 8.1% increase. Port container throughput totaled 3.71 million TEUs, up by 7.2%. The total volume of highway passenger transportation reached 75.026 million person-trips, an increase of 11.7%. Railway passenger departures totaled 86.6669 million person-trips, up by 11.8%. Waterway passenger volume was 756,200 person-trips, down by 4.3%. Air passenger transportation reached 13.5141 million person-trips, representing a 15.3% increase. The total airport passenger throughput for the year was 31.1797 million, an increase of 14.0%. A total of 15 rail transit lines have been completed (including 2 tram lines) with an operational mileage of 483.3 kilometers (including 16.8 kilometers of tram routes). Throughout the year, the subway passenger volume was 1.096 billion person-trips, up by 8.6% over the previous year.
At the end of the year, the total number of motor vehicles in the whole city (excluding tractors) was 3.5969 million, an increase of 208.9 thousand vehicles compared to the end of the previous year. Specifically, the number of private cars was 2.6667 million, an increase of 180 thousand.
Throughout the year, the business volume of post services reached the standard level of 15.774 billion, up by 18.2%; the revenue from postal services was 15.985 billion yuan, up by 7.1%. Throughout the year, the business volume of telecommunication services was 19.125 billion, up by 5.6% over the previous year; the revenue from telecommunication services was 20.795 billion yuan, up by 3.6% Throughout the year, the total express delivery volume was 1323 million pieces, up by 15.7% over the previous year.
The city’s total tourism revenue for the year reached 218.73 billion yuan, representing a 10.6% increase on a comparable basis. Of this, international tourism revenue totaled 790 million USD, a year-on-year increase of 12.1%. The total number of domestic and international tourist visits reached 181.37 million, reflecting a 15.3% increase on a comparable basis. Among them, the number of inbound overnight tourist visits was 580,000, marking a 69.2% year-on-year growth.
VIII. Public Finance and Financial Sector
The city’s general public budget revenue for the year amounted to 159.602 billion yuan, of which tax revenue accounted for 129.071 billion yuan, representing 80.9% of the total. General public budget expenditure totaled 170.526 billion yuan.
At the end of the year, the balance of domestic and foreign currency deposits in all financial institutions reached 5,698.755 billion yuan, an increase of 5.0% over the end of the previous year and a rise of 270.763 billion yuan from the beginning of the year. Among this, household deposits totaled 1,735.94 billion yuan, an increase of 190.628 billion yuan from the beginning of the year; deposits of non-financial enterprises stood at 1,682.873 billion yuan, a decrease of 11.446 billion yuan from the beginning of the year. The balance of domestic and foreign currency loans in financial institutions reached 5,881.818 billion yuan at year-end, up by 8.2% from the end of the previous year and an increase of 448.029 billion yuan from the beginning of the year. Throughout the year, 4 new listed companies, both domestic and foreign, have established their presence, bringing the total number to 164.

In 2024, original insurance premium income[3]of insurance companies totaled 116.171 billion yuan, representing a 10.2% increase over the previous year on a comparable basis. Among them, original premium income from life insurance was 74.114 billion yuan; health and accident insurance businesses generated 17.172 billion yuan; and property insurance business generated 24.885 billion yuan.
IX. People's Livelihood and Social Security
In 2024, the per capita disposable income of residents in the city reached 75,180 yuan, an increase of 4.3% over the previous year. The wages income was 47.118 thousand yuan, up by 4.6%; the net business income was 7.570 thousand yuan, up by 0.8%; the net property income was 7.368 thousand yuan, up by 1.5%; the net transfer income was 13.124 thousand yuan, up by 6.9%. Based on the place of permanent residence, the per capita disposable income of urban residents was 83.084 thousand yuan, up by 4.0%; the per capita disposable income of rural residents was 38.690 thousand yuan, up by 5.2%. Throughout the year, the per capita consumption expenditure of residents in the city was 44.578 thousand yuan, up by 3.2% over the previous year. Based on the place of permanent residence, the per capita consumption expenditure of urban residents was 47.916 thousand yuan, up by 2.9%; the per capita consumption expenditure of rural residents was 29.165 thousand yuan, up by 4.9%. The Engel coefficient of residents in the city was 26.0%, with 25.5% for urban residents and 29.6% for rural residents.

By the end of the year, the number of people enrolled in basic pension insurance for enterprise employees stood at 3.7606 million. Those covered by basic medical insurance for urban employees totaled 5.5751 million. Unemployment insurance participants reached 3.5060 million; work-related injury insurance covered 3.9246 million people; and maternity insurance covered 3.6301 million people. By the end of the year, a total of 42,000 people were receiving subsistence allowances, including 18,300 urban residents and 23,700 rural residents. The unified urban-rural minimum living standard was raised to 1,080 yuan per month.
X. Science, Technology, and Education
The city was home to 618 provincial-level and above engineering technology research centers, including 15 at the national level. A total of 2.35 million square meters of urban "Silicon Alleys" had been completed and put into use, accommodating over 3,800 enterprises. There were approximately 10,500 high-tech enterprises with valid certification, and around 21,900 technology-based small and medium-sized enterprises registered in the database. Municipal-level new-type R&D institutions and their affiliated enterprises achieved a total revenue of 74.89 billion yuan over the year.
A total of 67,325 patents were granted citywide, including 31,310 invention patents, representing a year-on-year increase of 9.6%. The number of valid invention patents reached 158,512, up by 13.8% from the previous year, with 167.01 valid invention patents per 10,000 people. Throughout the year, 38,000 technology contracts were registered and recognized, with a total transaction value of 107.5 billion yuan, marking an increase of 7.3%. Twenty-nine achievements received the National Science and Technology Award. Major innovation platforms such as the National Regional Technology Transfer and Commercialization Center for Universities were established. Nanjing ranked 5th globally in the "2024 Nature Index – Research Cities" and 9th in the "2024 Global Innovation Index" among global science and technology clusters.
There were 53 general institutes of higher education in the whole city (excluding military institutes), with 834,300 students enrolled (excluding postgraduates), an increase of 34,900 over the previous year. The number of postgraduate students enrolled in Nanjing-based universities and institutions providing postgraduate programs was 219,900, an increase of 11,800 over the previous year. The city had 284 general secondary schools with 343,900 students, up by 27,000 from the previous year; 22 secondary vocational schools with 64,000 students; 15 special education schools with 2,500 students; 402 primary schools with 575,900 students; and 1,012 kindergartens accommodating 226,100 children. In the whole city, the standardization rate of compulsory education schools has reached 100%.
XI. Culture, Health and Sports
The city had a total of 176 cultural industry quarters (bases) at or above the municipal level, of which 15 was at the national level, 31 at the provincial level, and 130 at the municipal level. By the end of the year, there were 14 cultural centers, 15 public libraries, 101 cultural stations, and 82 museums citywide. A total of 575 cultural relic protection sites above the municipal level were recorded, covering 651 designated locations. There were 1232 community comprehensive cultural service centers that meet provincial standards.
At the end of the year, there were 3979 health agencies. There were 446 hospitals, community healthcare centers and health centers, 14 maternal and child care service centers (offices, stations), and 3 specialized health institutions (offices, stations). In the whole city, there were 74,100 beds in various health agencies, of which 72,400 beds were in hospitals, community healthcare centers and health centers. There were 116,900 health workers, including 45,800 practicing (including assistant) physicians and 52,500 registered nurses.
Nanjing promoted the integration of sports events into scenic areas, commercial streets, and business districts through the "Three Entry" initiative. Over 130 such events were organized throughout the year. Twelve international sports events were successfully held, including the 2024 FIE Women's Épée World Cup and the 2024 Tour of Taihu Lake. More than 70 national-level events took place, and new event formats such as the 2024 World Snooker International Championship and the 2024 World Chinese King of Lion Dance Championship were introduced for the first time.
XII. Resources, Environment, and Emergency Management
In 2024, total electricity consumption across all sectors in the city reached 80.32 billion kilowatt-hours, representing a year-on-year increase of 7.5%. The comprehensive energy consumption of industrial enterprises above designated size was 39.2785 million tons of standard coal, up by 3.0% over the previous year.
Throughout the year, there were a total of 1720 emission-reduction projects completed, including 42 water pollution reduction projects and 1678 air pollution reduction projects, and the annual reduction tasks issued by the provincial government on all major pollutants were fully completed. The average annual concentration of PM2.5was 28 micrograms per cubic meter, and the number of days with good air quality or above was 314, accounting for 85.8%. The proportion of excellent and good water quality at the national and provincial level monitoring sections of surface water was 100%. The water quality of the Nanjing section of the Yangtze River meets the national surface water environmental quality standard of Class II, and the compliance rate of water quality at major centralized drinking water sources was also 100%.
Throughout the year, the city recorded 73 work safety accidents, resulting in 44 fatalities - down by 12% and 10.2% respectively compared with the previous year.
