Last December 26, Nanjing officially commenced garbage sorting trial. It is stated by Opinions of Jiangsu Government on Furthering Urban and Rural Household Garbage Treatment released by Jiangsu Provincial Government that, by 2015, a comparatively complete urban-rural aligned household garbage treatment system will be established in Jiangsu, and Nanjing, Wuxi, Changzhou and Suzhou will become household garbage sorting model cities.

Jiangsu Housing and Urban-rural Development Department will develop guiding opinions on garbage sorting to push forward household garbage sorting model city development and urban-rural household garbage sorting, including prioritize the separation of construction garbage, bulky waste, landscaping garbage and organic garbage from farm and secondary products markets; managing hazardous waste such as florescent lamp and thermometer with mercury, battery and electronic products. By end of this year, there will be a hazardous waste treatment yard in each city of Jiangsu.

The Opinions also specifies that by 2015, facility of non-hazardous treatment for household garbage will be available in all cities and counties of Jiangsu and non-hazardous treatment rate will respectively reach 100% and above 95%. Garbage integrated collection rate in towns and villages will reach over 80%. In province-administrated municipalities, utilization rate of household garbage will reach more than 30% and more than 50% in Nanjing, Wuxi, Changzhou, Suzhou and Zhenjiang. By 2020, comprehensive garbage sorting collection and treatment will be realized in all cities of Jiangsu.
