Photo Exhibition Kicked Off.: Nanjing Commodities were famous in America 200 years ago

The ongoing photo exhibition "Nanjing Memories during the Intercourse of China and America" which was held in Nanjing Construction Museum exhibited lots of Nanjing's precious historical photos in the history of the intercourse of China and America. This exhibition has aroused a stir when exhibited in New York and St, Louis in early November.

What is rarely known to public is that long before Nanjing citizens got to know America, most of American already know Nanjing.

The exhibition unveiled this story to us: in 1784, American business vessel "Chinese Queen" sailed started from New York port and establish a precedent for the SINO-America business. American were quite attached to the tea-leaf, silk and China produced in the middle and lower reaches of Changjiang River in China. Nanjing was the main exporting port for these goods then, so these goods were called "Nanjing Goods" by the westerners.

This year is the 30th anniversary for the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and America. And the first pair of sister cities between the two countries since the establishment of diplomatic relations is Nanjing and St. Louis.

During the Nanjing Memories during the Intercourse of China and America, the visiting trip of the reporters delegation of Nanjing Daily was also quite important.

In 2000, Nanjing Daily and St.Louis Post-Dispatch, American main stream media, sent reporters to each other's country for interview. The chief journalist of St.Louis Post-Dispatch made continuous interviews in Nanjing for over 20 days and published whole-edition reports on successive days. The reports introduced Nanjing objectively and justly and evoke great repercussions in America. In the mean time, journalists of Nanjing Daily including Ding Bangjie went for St. Louis, New York and Washington for interview. Especially their interview for Davis Magee, son of American clergy John Magee, who took the risk of losing his life to record the sole 105 minutes video for Nanjing Massacre by a 16mm vidicon aroused great stir in China. This communication initiate an example for Chinese local main stream media making independent news communication with foreign local main stream media.(Nanjing Daily)
