Three Koalas Will Be Settled in Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo
2018-01-05

On January 3rd, Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo held a press conference to introduce that later this month, three koalas from Australia will be admitted to the zoo. After the quarantine period, citizens can watch these lazy animals just in Nanjing. And Nanjing is to be the second city to have koalas after Guangzhou.

Brushy head, big round ears, and thick, soft, bushy brown short hair, the cute koala is Australia's national treasure. Koala, also called "koala bear", is the laziest animal. It sleeps in the tree at least 18-20 hours a day and eats eucalyptus leaves or is in a daze in at the rest of time. Because of gentle nature, lovely appearance and interesting personality, the koala has gained a lot of "fans" in the world and has become a "Internet celebrity".

Zhang Jianrong, the deputy leader of the zoo introduced that as early as in 2014, the zoo had began to communicate with Australia on introducing koalas. But its export management was very strict just like in China, it took a long time to successfully introduce the koala. In the past three years, Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo has passed the Australian strength assessment and qualification examination and approval successively.

Under the condition of artificial breeding, each koala needs to eat 10 to 15 kilograms of fresh eucalyptus leaves every day. Thence, the zoo studied the grow seedlings and planting technology with garden experts from Nanjing and Guangzhou. Also, the zoo also reached a long-term agreement with eucalyptus plantations in Florida to supply eucalyptus leaves for a long time.
